Cloud Hands - Yun shou

I've always enjoyed sports, athletic training, and mindfulness exercises.  I played high school
sports (1959-1963), have been very active in strength training (1974-), and have hiked in
the mountains of California and Nevada since 1960.  I began my formal studies of Taijiquan
and Qigong in 1986, and of Yoga in 2003.  I am a firm believer that cross training improves
performance in and enhances appreciation for Taijiquan, Qigong and Yoga.  Therefore, I
still enjoy many physical fitness activities such as strength training, aerobics, Taijiquan
heavy bag work, qigongyoga, relaxation practices, weapons practice, hiking, walking
team sports, massage, dancemeditation, free play, push hands, etc.  I began my formal
studies in Western Philosophy in 1963, and in Chinese and Asian philosophy and religion
in 1961.  I have been an active gardener since 1955.

My T’ai Chi Ch’uan Practice

Taijiquan, for me, is a daily personal practice.  I enjoy doing forms each day, following most of
the principles of this internal martial arts system, and reaping the health and happiness benefits
from the daily practice of this ancient body-mind-spirit art.  My general outlook is one of an
open-minded practitioner, movement arts explorer, and enthusiastic advocate for many styles
and approaches to Taijiquan.  For me, the practice of Taijiquan embodies beauty and style,
enhances awareness and concentration, and contributes to one's improved energy and vitality.

I am a firm believer that cross training improves performance in and enhances appreciation for
Taijiquan.  Therefore, I enjoy many physical fitness activities such as strength training, aerobics,
Taijiquan
, heavy bag work, qigongyoga, relaxation practices, weapons practice, hiking, walking
team sports, massage, dancemeditation, free play, push hands, etc.

My interest in Taijiquan began in the 1980’s after reading books and articles by Jou Tsung Hwa,
T.T. Liang, Cheng Man-ch'ing, Sophia Delza, Bob Klein, and Herman Kauz.  I first took lessons
from a qualified instructor in 1986.  Since then, I have learned much more about Taijiquan from
over 500 hours of instruction in classes, workshops, and at special events; and, of course, from
thousands of hours of personal practice.  In addition, I have greatly  benefited from reading
and studying hundreds of magazine articles, books, videotapes, and DVDs to learn more
about Taijiquan and Qigong.

My main Taijiquan practice is in the Yang Style of Taijiquan, both the short and long forms.  My
main Qigong practices are the Eight Section Brocade and Five Animal Frolics.
I have been
certified by Paul Lam M.D. to teach Tai Chi for Diabetes.

There are many useful methods for learning Taijiquan.  Many favor working closely with a single teacher
in a single style for many years or even decades.  Some recommend studying with many different teachers.
Some have learned everything they know from videotapes, books and occasional workshops.  A few
favor a highly structured learning style with well defined training phases, detailed lesson plans, and
qualifying tests. The “best” method for learning Taijiquan, in my opinion, is the one that will result in
you walking with a smile into your practice area each and every day and actually doing Taijiquan for
one delightful hour.

I have never been an “advanced student, senior student, assistant instructor, initiate, protégé, or disciple”
of any Taijiquan or Qigong master-teacher.   Professional, family, and community service responsibilities,
as well as a penchant for independence, have led me away from the path of forging a close and long-term
student-teacher relationship that is favored by some Taijiquan and Qigong enthusiasts.
There are a few
disadvantages for me as well as many advantages for me with the approach I have taken.  We all do what
we can do or want to do to advance ourselves in the art of Taijiquan - I just happen to favor solo practice.

The above outline of my experiences in studying Taijiquan will give my readers some idea about my
long-standing involvement with and study of Taijiquan.  As one can see, I favor variety, ongoing research,
philosophical studies, and playful exploration.  I keep a Taijiquan Journal and publish the Cloud Hands
Taijiquan website.

All of the instructors listed above offer classes for students in dojos, health clubs, college classrooms,
or workshop centers.  I heartily recommend these instructors and master teachers.  You will need to
contact them for more information on their current class or workshop schedules, requirements, fees,
and for other business arrangements.
