Introduction to the Eight of Wands Tarot Website

I began work on the Eight of Wands Tarot Website in June of 2011.  I had begun a three year program to study and research the Tarot.  I had used Tarot decks since 1975 and had read many books on the subject since 1975.  This website will record the results of my Tarot research and practices from 2011-2013.

My first goal was to set up the structure of the Eight of Wands Tarot Website in June of 2011.  A comprehensive index to the website was created and called the Tarot Keywords Index.  I created a webpage for a sequential entry of my work plans and notes.  A variety of webpages to hold content were created as reflected in the links at the top of this webpage.  The first draft of a research bibliography was created.  Every webpage included links to books on the topic that a reader can purchase from Amazon.  If a reader will click on any image in this website, it will take them to Amazon or another webpage in the website.  Although I don't plan to blog much on the topic, I will make some Tarot related entries in my Paths in the Valley Blog

My main focus from July 2011 until January 2013 will be on creating the first drafts of webpages on the suits, pip cards, court cards, and aces.  I intend to make the Eight of Wands Tarot Website the best website on the Minor Arcana.  It will be of value to those who use regular playing cards for divination or magick.

In July of 2011, work was started on the suit of Wands (Hearts).  I intend to complete work on the pip, court, and ace cards of the suit of Wands (Hearts) by the end of August, 2011.

After February, 2013, I will create first drafts of webpages on the Major Arcana.  Since many other websites now already provide extensive commentary on the Major Arcana, this is a lower priority for me.

My plan includes work with the Tarot in a context of ceremonial magick, rituals, divinatin, and magick.  I have a keen interest in Neopagan spiritual practices and Taoism.  I could have chosen to study the Futark Runes, Ogham, or I Ching; but, instead, have chosen to study the Tarot

I seldom did Tarot readings for other persons prior to September, 2011.  Starting in the Autumn of 2011, I began providing such "Tarot Reading" services upon request, and now consider myself more qualified and knowledgeable about the Tarot than I did in the past.

My plan is to study and practice using the Tarot cards for at least one hour each day from June 2011 until June 2013.  I study one card carefully each day.  I do a reading spread each day.  I have prepared numerous flash index cards to help with memorization of standard and traditional Tarot meanings and associations.

I began using Tarot decks in 1975.  I have studied and used a wide variety of Tarot decks.  There are scores of beautiful and creative Tarot deck designs to capture your imagination, resonate with your philosophical or religious outlook, feed your spiritual hunger, provide you with clues as to how to direct your will to mold future events, and astonish you in many ways.  I tend to favor modern decks that move away from the Renaissance, Italian and French cultural emphasis of the earliest decks (e.g., Visconti-Sforza Tarrocchi Cards, 1445; Marseille Tarot Deck, 1751), decks that include descriptive words and more complex pictographic images on the Minor Arcana cards that point to associated meanings, decks influenced by the Golden Dawn magical traditions, cards that are creative and colorful, decks that are printed in different sizes, and decks with an associated printed literature that explain the symbols, art, and concepts that the designers had in mind when they worked with artists to create the cards in the deck.

After considerable practice with Tarot decks, I have found that following three Tarot decks work best for me for contemplation, meditation, reflection, inspiration, magic and divination:

1.  Thoth Tarot, The Book of Thoth, The Egyptian Tarot.
This deck was designed by Aleister Crowley, Master Therion, Ordo Templi Orientis, O.T.O.  The cards were painted on canvas from 1938-1943, in a projective synthetic geometrical style, by Lady Frieda Harris (1877-1962), under the supervision of Aleister Crowley.  This deck was Crowley's vision based on his extensive knowledge of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn system, his O.T.O. philosophy, Quabalah, Enochian Magick, Hermeticism, Egyptian mysteries, astrology, numerology, etc.  The significant artistic creativity of Lady Frieda Harris have led many to call it the Crowley/Harris deck.  The paintings of each card were photographed and first published as a Tarot deck in 1969 by the O.T.O., and were then rephotographed and published as a deck with improved printing in 1972 and 1986.  This deck now is available in large, medium and miniature sizes.  This is the deck I use to practice Tarot magic as per Donald Tyson's Portable Magic and John Michael Greer's Learning Ritual Magic.  The Minor Arcana are more developed in this deck.

2.
The Voyager Tarot.  This photomontage deck was designed by James Wanless, Ph.D.  The photographic collage artwork was created by Ken Knutson.  It was first published in 1984, and then in 1991 and 2008.  The Minor Arcana are extensively developed in this deck, although the Minor suits become Crystals (for Swords), World (Disks), Cups, and Wands (Staff) in the Voyager Tarot.

3.  The Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot.  This very popular Tarot deck was first published in 1909 by the Rider Company in England.  It was illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith based on the symbolism provided by Arthur Edward Waite.  This is one of the first "modern" Tarot deck designs with symbolism drawn from the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn system of magic.  This Tarot deck comes in poster sized, large, medium, and miniature sizes.  The Minor Arcana is more developed in this deck.   There are are numerous differently colored versions and slightly modified versions of the Rider Tarot deck available now in print.
