Chang Yiu-chun's Broadsword of the Yang Family.  UTube Video, 2006, 3:38 minutes.  Erle Montaigue.  "Probably the most dangerous weapon ever invented, this form is also one of the greatest healing forms ever invented. It comes in a direct lineage from Yang Shou-hou and is considered to be the Original Yang Family Broadsword form of the Old Yang Style. With fa-jing movements, leaps and jumps, this form will balance you internally as well as balance out the amount of minerals and chemicals in your body. For fitness, there is nothing finer as it works every muscle and sinew in the body over only a five minute period. This is not the broadsword form that most people are used to seeing as it is based upon the Original Yang Lu-ch'an Taijiquan form and not the Yang Cheng-fu version."

Taijiquan Swordsmanship: Quotations, Notes, Tips, Commentary, History, Health, Mental, Principles

A number of Yang style experts (e.g., Yang, Jwing-Ming, Michael Gilman) recommend that students first learn the Yang Style Saber (Broadsword, Dao, Falchion) Form and Techniques before learning the Yang Style Straight Sword (Jian) Form and Techniques.

"The Saber has commonly been known as the foundation of the double blade sword training. However, it is generally seen that most Taijiquan practitioners have preferred learning Taiji Sword first. They do not understand that without the Saber's basic drills and skills, the potential they can reach in Taiji Sword training will be shallow."
Yang Jwing-Ming

"Traditional Yang Style Tai Chi saber belongs to the short weapon in the Yang Style Tradition. It came from Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan empty hand form. The requirements, the method, the style and the characteristics of Yang Style Tai Chi Saber are basically the same as the empty form. Even some of the postures are like the empty hand form. Plus, being equipped with the steel saber, the form is more powerful and with a higher spirit. It has a unique style of its own.

The requirements of practicing are to also follow “The Ten Essentials of Tai Chi Chuan” as a guideline, and the skills of saber. The pace of the movements is faster than the empty hand form. It requires the movements to be standard and accurate. Stress is placed on the coordination of hand form, eye movement, body work, footsteps and skill. The waist is the dominant factor in leading all the movements. The arms follow the body’s turn. The saber follows the arm’s move."
Yang Zhen Duo

"Most Chinese martial arts schools still train extensively with the dao, seeing it as a powerful conditioning tool and a versatile weapon, with self defense techniques transferable to similarly sized objects more commonly found in the modern world, such as canes, baseball or cricket bats, for example. There are also schools that teach double broadsword shuang dao , forms and fencing, one Dao for each hand.
One measure of the proper length of the sword should be from the hilt in your hand and the tip of the blade at the brow and in some schools, the height of shoulder. Alternatively, the length of the sword should be from the middle of the throat along the length of the outstretched arm. There are also significantly larger versions of dao used for training in some Baguazhang and Taijiquan schools."
