I began using Tarot decks in 1975. I have studied and used a wide variety of Tarot decks. There are scores of beautiful and creative Tarot deck designs to capture your imagination, resonate with your philosophical or religious outlook, feed your spiritual hunger, provide you with clues as to how to direct your will to mold future events, and astonish you in many ways. I tend to favor modern decks that move away from the medieval and Christian emphasis of earlier decks, decks that include descriptive words on the Minor Arcana cards that point to associated meanings, decks influenced by the Golden Dawn magical traditions, cards that are creative and colorful, decks that are printed in different sizes, and decks with an associated printed literature that explain the symbols, art, and concepts that the designers had in mind when they worked with artists to create the cards in the deck.
After considerable practice with Tarot decks, I have found that following four Tarot decks work best for me for contemplation, meditation, reflection, inspiration, magic and divination:
1. Thoth Tarot, The Book of Thoth, The Egyptian
Tarot. This deck
was designed by Aleister Crowley, Master Therion,
Ordo Templi Orientis,
O.T.O. The cards were painted on canvas, in a projective synthetic geometrical
style, by Lady Frieda Harris, from 1938-1943, under the close supervision of Aleister Crowley. This deck was Crowley's
vision based on his extensive knowledge of
the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn system, his O.T.O. philosophy, Quabalah, Enochian
Magick, Hermeticism, Egyptian mysteries, astrology, numerology, etc. The
significant artistic creativity of Lady Frieda Harris have led many to call it
the Crowley/Harris deck. The paintings of
each card were photographed and first published as a Tarot deck in 1969 by the O.T.O., and were
then rephotographed and published as a deck with improved printing in 1972 and 1986.
This deck now is available in large,
medium and miniature sizes. This is the deck I use to practice Tarot magic
as per Donald Tyson's
Portable Magic and John Michael Greer's
Learning Ritual Magic.
2. The Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot. This
very popular Tarot deck was first published in 1909 by the Rider Company in
England. It was illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith based on the symbolism
provided by Arthur Edward Waite. This is one of the first "modern" Tarot deck designs with symbolism drawn
from the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn system of magic. This Tarot
deck comes in poster sized, large, medium, and miniature sizes. There are are
numerous differently colored versions and slightly modified versions of the
Rider Tarot deck available now in
print.
3. The Voyager Tarot.
This photomontage deck was designed by James Wanless, Ph.D. The photographic collage
artwork was created by Ken Knutson. It was first published in 1984, and
then in 1991
and 2008.
4. Tao Oracle. This deck was designed by
Ma Deva Padma in 2002. It is based on the Chinese Book of Changes,
the I Ching.
