Dragon Qigong, Exercise 1

The Silver Dragon Gazes at the Pearl and then Spreads Open Its Wings

A.  The Silver Dragon Gazes at the Pearl

Stand with feet together, or no more than 12" apart.  Bring both arms to the outside of your hips.  Feet remain flat on the ground during the entire exercies.

Slowly raise the arms up to the side until they are about shoulder height.  Palms face down.

Turn the palms to face up as you move the arms toward the front.

As the arms move forward, simultaneously begin to bend the knees and begin to squat down.

Draw the arms forward and bring the elbows down towards the knees.

Bring the hands together until the sides of the palms touch.  Fingers face up.  Imagine holding a beautiful white pearl in your hands.  Look at the pearl.  Pause.

Imagine the Pearl appearing as the hands touch and disappearing as the hands move apart.

Squat at a height that is comfortable, mildly challenging, an appropriate for your level of conditioning.

Begin with a higher squat and go lower, if you can, as you increase the repetitions.

B.  The Silver Dragon Spreads Open Its Wings

Slowly begin to stand up as both arms are opened outward to the sides.  Palms are turned to face down.

Bring both arms slowly upward as high as you can reach as you are standing up straight.

Gently lean back as the arms are stretched up and back.  The palms face forward.  Look upward.  Pause.

Don't overdue the backward stretch.  Start slowly.  Be gentle with your body.

Slowly, gently, and fluidly return the arms foward and down to repeat The Silver Dragon Gazes at the Pearl.

Repeat each phase, A. and B., for four to eight repetitions.

Remain calm, poised, and relaxed (Sung) throughout both phases.
