Proposed Constitutional Amendment: War Powers by Public Vote

I was surprised when I did a Google search on the “28th Amendment” to see that my own proposed 28th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States was ranked number three.

War Powers Authorization by Public Vote
A Proposed 28th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America
2nd Draft, March 17, 2008, by Mike Garofalo

I recently reflected, somewhat tongue in cheek, on other proposed 28th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.

If I prayed, which I don’t, I would plead to dear old St. Patrick, “Dear St. Patrick, please help us all find a way to peace and please drive away all the deceitful and profiteering warmongers; and, please don’t drive out any of those lovely slithering snakes for the sake of diversity. In Athena’s name we pray, amen.”

Poop Happens

“Nature does have manure and she does have roots as well as blossoms,
and you can’t hate the manure and blame the roots for not being blossoms.”
- Buckminster Fuller

“The main characteristic of Nature’s farming can therefore be summed up
in a few words. Mother earth never attempts to farm without live stock;
she always raises mixed crops; great pains are taken to preserve the soil
and to prevent erosion; the mixed vegetable and animal wastes are converted
into humus; there is no waste; the processes of growth and the processes
of decay balance one another; ample provision is made to maintain large
reserves of fertility; the greatest care is taken to store the rainfall; both
plants and animals are left to protect themselves against disease.”
- Sir Albert Howard, An Agricultural Testament, 1940

I have been very busy turning manure into the empty vegetable gardens, scattering fertilizer 16-16-16 on shrubs and vegetables, and seeding and fertilizing lawns in preparation for the rainstorm coming on Sunday night.

Senior Health: A Positive Mindset

“What are the qualities that make one’s mindset positive?
They include being able to:

Think in a calm, pacified, and reflective manner instead of being disturbed, agitated, and impulsive in one’s reactions.

Put ideas together rationally and arrive at the right judgment even in the absence of obvious evidence or proof.

Decide, plan, and execute a course of action in a patient, persistent, and disciplined manner.

Recognize the changes and be flexible in adapting to them.

Observe and perceive things with a sense of humor instead of outrage, indignation, and anger.

Let go of useless and counterproductive thoughts, desires, and ambitions instead of being preoccupied with them.

Relax and meditate or rest.

Resist temptation and coercion.”

- Michael Fekete, Strength Training for Seniors, Hunter House, 2006, p. 36

The Back Porch in March

A few years back, Karen and I added a screened back porch to our home. We have many potted plants on the porch, and a few comfortable chairs.

In the springtime, we have some spectacular views of the ornamental trees and fruit trees in bloom. This week, the ornamental plum (with pink blossoms) and the ornamental pear (with white blossoms) put on quite a show for us. The pecan trees (foregroud with white painted trunks) have yet to leaf out this year.

The last few days have been overcast and cool - the perfect time for a cup of coffee and sitting in the back porch.
