Walking, Qigong, and Taijiquan for 120 minutes at midmorning (8-10 am).
Review Part III of Yang Style Long Form.  A beautiful day with clear skies,
great views of all the mountains (many with snow capped peaks), moderate
winds, and cool air.

Teach Greg Taijiquan - some emphasis upon the 13 Principles of Taijiquan.
I discuss the meanings of Peng, Lu, Ji, An as energetic movements.

Outdoor work projects: prepare dog house for winter, shed construction,
shoveling gravel.

Weightlifting at gym for 40 minutes: bench press, squats, upright rowing,
bicep curls.

Halloween night memories of my childhood in Bandini, East Los Angeles.
We always went Trick or Treating with other children, and also went to
a community event at the Bandini Elementary School cafateria.  The costumes,
the candy, walking about at night, friends, the cold night air, playing ... what
fond memories.

"Greetings from Taiwan,
I came upon your Sun style taijiquan website by happy accident the other day.
I thought you did an outstanding job bringing together all that information
on Sun style taiji. I myself practice Sun style taiji and enjoy it quite a bit. ...
I just wanted to let you know I had stopped by and was very impressed. Also,
being over 40, I found the other section on older folks fitness to be helpful and
interesting. Take care, Brian Kennedy"

Karen and I worked in the garden all day.  We spread 22 bags of fertilizer, completely
removed the remnants of the summer garden, planted the winter garden, weeded,
closed down and covered the swamp cooler for the winter, and dug sumps and shoveled
gravel in the driveway and in other low areas.  It was a beautiful cool autumn day -
perfect for outdoor work.  Karen really enjoys working outdoors in the garden.

October 19, Tuesday, 2004

Work for CUESD 7:30 - 4:00.  I need to focus more on writing, rather than
coordinating.

The second day of a big rainstorm was impressive.  We have gotten 2.5 inches
in two days - a large amount for us.  Our yard was a loblolly of mud and huge
puddles.  What a great benefit for our trees and shrubs to get such a good
deep rain this early in our rainy season: October - April.

Walking on an inclined treadmill for 20 minutes, weightlifting
for 40 minutes, and then yoga class with Gudrun Volpat from 5:30-6:45 at TFFC.

After I left the gym it had stopped raining.  The air was so very fresh and pure and
energizing.

October 16, Saturday, 2004

Taught Taijiquan and Qigong from 9-11:30 and my first yoga
class from 11:30 - 12:30.  Seven students, three new students, and
four advanced regulars took the yoga class.  I made a few mistakes, e.g.,
did not do the arms correctly in Eagle pose, forgot the names of some poses,
may not have closed as well.  Cindy, an advanced yogini and 4th grade teacher,
said I did well doing the long stretches.  Janeth, an advanced yogini, said I did
very well.  I was confindent and encouraged and know I can do better each time.

Developing notes on Willpower.

Mow lawns, water, weed, work on outdoor shed.  We watered all day and night from

We practiced and rehearsed our YogaFit routines, enjoyed a beginner's class, and learned
about many aspects of teaching yoga.  The teacher, Rose Zahnn, was energetic,
enthusiastic, very knowledgeable, articulate, a tremendous yoga athlete, and an
outstanding motivator.  I enjoyed meeting a number of great yoga students and
teachers in this seminar for future yoga teachers.

As I drove home from Sacramento, I was physically tired and mentally energized.
What a delicious combination.

October 9, Saturday, 2004

I walked around the Healthy Habits studio on J Street in Sacramento.  It is a
lovely area of small businesses, churches, homes and many apartments.   Large
trees line all the streets and yards.  I walked the labyrinth at the Pioneer Congregational
Church directly across from Sutter's Fort (circa 1848).  It was a beautiful, cool,
windy morning after a light shower last night.

I was a bit sore from last nights workout.  I attended a beginner's yoga class at the
studio in the morning.

Our class focused on a thorough review of all the postures used in a beginning
YogaFit style of class.  The teacher did an excellent job of explaining, modeling,
and reviewing important points, including modifications, about each of the
many postures.

I was the oldest person in the class; and working along with 17 other fine and
intelligent women in the class, I was the only man in the group.  Why don't more
men get into yoga?

"Basketball is an endurance sport, and you have to learn to control your breath; that's
the essence of yoga, too.  So, I consciously began using yoga techniques in my practice
and playing.  I think yoga helped reduce the number and severity of injuries I suffered.
As preventative medicine, it's unequaled."

Drive to Sacramento to attend a three day YogaFit teacher training program.
The YogaFit Level 1 Teacher Training was led by Rose Zahnn.  The workshop
was held at the Healthy Habits Studio on J Street in Sacramento.

We began the evening with an overview of the manual.  We did a long and
intense intermediate power yoga workout.  Finally, we talked about teaching and
postures.

Work for CUESD 7:30 - 4:00.

Weightlifting for 40 minutes, and then yoga class with
Gudrun Volpat from 5:30-6:40 at TFFC.

I gave Gudrun a number of special gifts tonight.  I have studied with her
two or three times each week for one whole year.  What a pleasure!  I was
saddened to learn of the poor health of her mother.  She generously offered
me the use of her yoga books, and loaned me a audio CD on healing sounds.

"Heaven for climate.  Hell for company."
-  Mark Twain

A person wrote to me after reading my comments about Paramhansa Yogananda:

"Hello Mike,

Read your views on "AY" and the Paramhansa.

With full respect I must say that although you
practice different yoga techniques your maturity of
the mind seems still to be in infancy and most
definitely you have never been in close association of
an enlightened being.

What you are trying to do is an act of measuring the
ocean with a cup.

Do you even realize you are trying to judge someone
with whatever limited knowledge you have -- not the
bookish knowledge I mean but knowledge of experience.

I am at awe to see at those comments made by you --
quiet child-like isn't it ? They are indeed truly funnny!!

- Chetan"

I'm pleased Chetan found something "truly funny" in my writing.

I'm just a little teacup, short and stout ....
The Paramhansa is just a big goose, short and stout.

Drove to San Francisco Bay, through Petaluma, and Pt. Reyes station, and then to
Samuel P. Taylor State Park.  I took some long walks along the Pt. Reyes shoreline.
The camped at SPT State Park in a beautiful redwood forest along a stream.

Lots of traffic, bikers, and many people enjoying the fine weather along the coast.
Pt. Reyes had no trees - a complete surprise to me.  I had expected the whole area
to be forested.
